David Townsend    Chairperson

I moved to Dumfries from Oxfordshire in February 2016 having been involved in voluntary LGBT support work for many years. Between 2004 and 2015 I led a pioneering, church-based, LGBT ministry in Oxford. My particular interest is in LGBT chaplaincy and I have a BA Hons in Theology for Ministry and Mission, which I gained as a lay-student through a ministerial training course.
I was also a non-executive director of Oxford Pride and an ordained elder in the United Reformed Church before moving to Scotland.
I am delighted to serve on the Board of D&G LGBT Plus as well as support the charity through volunteer roles. I am also exploring LGBT chaplaincy with a local Church of Scotland in Dumfries.

Dyfrig Hywel     Vice Chair

I am 39 and originally from North Wales. I now live in Dumfries with my husband. I’ve volunteered for LGBT charities since my early twenties, and am passionate about equal rights; we’ve come a long way, but there’s still a way to go.
I was a teacher and SENCo at a primary school on Anglesey for ten years before moving to Scotland; I now work in public health.
My hobbies include gardening, natural history and pets; we have a menagerie at home – dogs, parrots, parakeets, snakes and tortoises!

Ruth Phoenix     Treasurer

I was born in Nottingham and worked in a few different roles after leaving college including mechanical engineering and being a self employed “handy woman” helping elderly folk with gardening and DIY work. I moved to Dumfries and Galloway over 20 years ago and have worked for the local authority in health and social care for the last 12 years. I have wide and varied experience of all sorts of social settings and of supporting people. As a lesbian I’ve been on the fringe of the development of LGBT+ services in Dumfries and Galloway over several years and am staggered by how well the team locally have done in bringing LGBT+ issues to the forefront in our area. I’m proud and humbled to be a board member and hope to serve our community well.

Ian Barber     HR

I studied at the University of Wales graduating with a degree in history followed by a PGCE. I then had a career in IT followed by Charity retail management, semi-retiring to Dumfries in 2010. Having always been out I have experience as well as an understanding of the issues and challenges facing the LGBTQI community and of long term conditions. Outside work and LGBT Plus, other pursuits include walking and gardening.

Pamela Deans – Trustee

I live in Dumfries, originally from the Thornhill area, so have always lived locally.  I have worked with Dumfries and Galloway Advocacy Service since 2005 and am the Chief Executive and Company Secretary. I am passionate about Advocacy and making sure that people are heard and have someone on their side to share thoughts, feelings and wishes. I am proud to serve on the Board of D&G LGBT Plus and am committed to supporting the service and the people who use it.
